Summer Worship Series

i.: aphorisms and eccliasiastes

What happens when traditional cultural and church aphorisms run into the biblical wisdom tradition running into faith affirmation of the presence of God? How often are our aphorism just what we wish were true, or manipulations of those who know they’re not, or escapist fantasy, or all of the above?

ii.: the ever-widening mercy of God

Tracing the unfolding story of God as recounted throughout Holy Scripture, we often find those who were initially condemned, subsequently celebrated; those initially excluded, included. In 2024 Christopher B. Hays and Richard B. Hays wrote The Widening of God’s Mercy (The title of Frank Stagg’s Acts commentary includes the affirmation of the unhindering of the gospel.) in the introduction of which they state, “there is an ongoing conversation within the Bible in which rules, boundaries, and theologies are repeatedly rethought. If God’s Spirit is still at work in the communities of faith that are grounded in the Bible, then that process must surely continue even now. As Karl Barth wrote, the theologian does not just ask ‘what the apostles and prophets said, but what we say on the basis of the apostle and the prophets.’ On the basis of the apostle’s and prophets, we conclude that the story of God and humanity is meant to be one of ever-expanding grace.” Join us for worship and catch the ripples ever widening from the love of God thrown into the heart of it all.

We hope you’ll join us for Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. and worship at 10:30 a.m.

 The Heart of Our Story: Our Church Covenant

Our Church Covenant guides our faith, at church and in the community.

“Trusting the we have been brought by divine grace to embrace the Lord Jesus Christ,

We now solemnly covenant with each other that God enabling us:

We will walk together in Christian love, exercising care and watchfulness over each other;

We will not forsake the assembling of ourselves for worship nor omit the disciplines of Bible study and prayer;

We will participate in each other’s joys, and will bear with tenderness and sympathy each other’s burdens and sorrows;

We will endeavor to bring up those who are under our care in the nurture and admonition of the Lord;

We will labor together as faithful stewards to support a vibrant ministry and endeavor by example and effort to lead others to Christ.

We will seek throughout life to live to the glory of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Each Communion Sunday (First Sunday of each month), we say these words as a congregation to celebrate and deepen our promise to God and to each other.

Our story, like yours, is unfolding.

Woodbrook Baptist Church is a welcoming and inclusive community of different stories, woven into a shared commitment of faith. With joy and honesty, we seek together the way of social justice, equality, and love.

We can’t wait to be part of your story.
